Join the FKMCD – Oxitec Mosquito Project!

Community engagement is ongoing and small, with focused projects running in a select number of neighborhoods in the Florida Keys. In addition to these ongoing community surveys, we’ve launched this sign-up so that Florida Keys residents can register their interest.

Requesting a mosquito box or a trap doesn’t guarantee that you will get one as it will depend on where you live and whether our project comes to your neighborhood, however, you can still be involved in the project by signing up for updates.

Mosquito Traps

Mosquito traps are tools used to survey mosquito populations, to:

• evaluate the size of the mosquito population;

• determine the mosquito species;

• indicate the effectiveness of control programs;

• control mosquito populations.

The FKMCD – Oxitec Mosquito Project uses two types of traps to monitor the success of the project:

Ovitraps

Ovitraps are simple containers filled 2/3 with water and something for the female mosquitoes to lay their eggs on. The female lays the eggs and flies away. The ovitrap is placed by FKMCD/Oxitec operators in a sheltered location around the outside of the home.

BG-Sentinel

These more complex traps attract and actively trap adult mosquitoes (males and females).

The traps need a source of electricity to power the fan inside the trap. Batteries are not an option. The amount of electricity consumption is negligible.  The BG Sentinel trap is placed in a sheltered location of your yard by FKMCD/Oxitec operators, close to mosquito resting places (vegetation) and away from high traffic areas. The traps are placed away from children and pets.
